Universidad del Valle Professors Lead Project Funded by the Canadian International Development Research Center


'Análisis y fortalecimiento de iniciativas locales para la adaptación al cambio climático en asentamientos informales en Latinoamérica y el Caribe' (In english: 'Analysis and strengthening of local initiatives for the adaptation to climate change in informal settlements in Latin America and the Caribbean') is the name of the research and implementation project in which teachers Adriana Patricia López Valencia, PhD. of the School of Engineering of Natural Resources and Environment-EIDENAR, and Oswaldo López Bernal, PhD. of the School of Architecture, both from Universidad del Valle will be working for the following four years.

The project, which will be carried out jointly with the local government and the Yumbo community in Valle del Cauca, is funded by more than $ 1.15 million by the International Development Research Center (IDRC) , Of Canada, in addition to being coordinated by the University of Montreal of the same country.

The purpose is to develop new strategies for collaborative work between the academic, public institutions, and civil society in order to generate knowledge transfers in the areas of vulnerability, resilience, governance and gender. This project will have the support of the Central University Marta Abreu de Las Villas (Cuba); The University of Bio-Bio (Chile); The State University of Haiti; University of Montreal; And three Colombian institutions, Universidad del Valle, Universidad Javeriana and the Antioquia Presente NGO.

Students from different academic programs of Universidad del Valle (Technology in Ecology and Environmental Management, Architecture and Engineering, Sociology, Design, Master's in Architecture and Urbanism and Master’s in Integrated Water Resources Management), the Government and the community of the Municipality of Yumbo, will carry out the work plan. This project will also allow us to deepen field work based on real problems, to incorporate transversal competences in teaching-learning process so as to develop effective interdisciplinary collaborative work strategies.

The participation of Universidad del Valle in this international project is part of the results of several proposals made within the framework of internationalization calls for the research group Habitat and Sustainable Development through its Laboratory of Urban Intervention (LIUR).
